According to the 2015 QS World University Rankings, Cambridge and Oxford form the top rank as the best universities in the UK, being 3rd and 6th in the overall, respectively. QS TopUniversities is the world’s most authoritative rankings guide that provides the list of the cream of the crop schools around the globe.
Among other UK universities in the top 10 for the 2015 interactive ranking, 7th placer UCL (University College London) and 8th placer Imperial College London were also featured.
Despite the continuous surge of higher education costs in the country, the UK still dominates the prestigious university rankings guide among all of the academic institutions in Europe.
The annual list uses six key indicators for its criteria selection: academic reputation, student-to-faculty ratio, citations per faculty, employer reputation, international faculty ratio, and international student ratio.
These six key indicators are also used for a deeper assessment of other important factors such as the university’s research, teaching, employability, and internationalization.
Located in the United Kingdom in the city of Cambridge, the second oldest university in the English-speaking world is now on its 800th year of world-class academic offerings. First established in 1209, this public university has already produced 88 Noble Prize winners and has notable alumni such as Sir Isaac Newton, Sir Francis Bacon, and Lord Alfred Tennyson, just to name a few.
University of Oxford
Located right in the middle between London and Gloucester, the oldest university in English-speaking circles is believed to have started in 1133 and was recognized as a university in 1167. It is interesting to note that a student, however tempting it can be to prove to do both, cannot apply to Oxford AND Cambridge in the same year. Residents and natives of Oxford, known as Oxonians, have its motto as Dominus Illuminatio Mea (latin), “The Lord is my Light.”
