If you’re one of those people who lose focus and interest in a short span of time, then you’re in luck. In this article, we’ve listed some of the things that will help you study better:
- If you’re studying online and through your computer, make sure to block the unnecessary websites that could distract you. There are free applications online that you could download to make this possible.
- Studying for long periods of time is never a good idea. Your brain can instantly go to Okay-I’m-done-with-this-I-just-want-to-sleep mode when you’ve been studying for hours on end. Take 5 to 15 minute breaks every once in a while (say, every two to three hours) to refresh your memory every time. This way, your brain can focus more on the things that needs to be understood and memorized.
- Cramming is always a bad idea. Pulling an all-nighter can cause stress, drowsiness, and loss of focus. Instead, study the day before your exam, or if possible, right before the exam starts. It might be difficult, but it’s the most effective way to memorize stuff.
- Read everything out loud. It’s actually scientifically proven that listening to the words while studying can help you memorize or understand things better.
- Make your notes more specific, as if you’re teaching things to someone else. If you have to draw diagrams, then do so. This will make you understand things in a clearer way, and will make memorizing stuff easier.
- Here’s a quick tip: if you’re studying on your computer, make sure to set the font to Times New Roman. It’s the easiest font to read, so your brain and eyes won’t grow tired immediately.
- Treat yourself! Give yourself small treats every time you finish a chapter on your book or every 3 pages on your notebook. Rewards are great motivators, and it will help you push yourself to finish that book. Yes, I just gave you an excuse to binge on those chocolates and candies that you’ve been storing on your fridge!
- Change things up every day. If you can, study in a different place every day. Studying in the same place can and will bore you, and even make you feel demotivated. Changing your environment can help retain knowledge in your brain. Just make sure that the place you’re going to is not too busy and distracting.
- Make up your own mnemonics. This is probably the most useful studying method. Creating a new word (even if it doesn’t make sense), from a series of words can help you remember things so much better. Take the first letter of every word that you need to remember, then form a new word using those first letters (for example: Eating, Sleeping, Resting, and Working = REWS). You can rearrange the letters to which one is the easiest to remember for you. This is extremely helpful for those enumeration exams.
- Walking and stretching before and during studying will help you feel more energized and focused. This helps amp up the blood in your veins, making you feel ready to take on anything.
